What are Root Canals?
Inside each one of your teeth is a small inner pulp. The pulp is often called the nerve, as it holds the nerves and blood supply vital to keeping the tooth healthy. If the pulp becomes infected by decay or exposed through a crack, it has to be removed. Removing the pulp helps to eliminate the pain and sensitivity that can occur when it is damaged.
Why would Root Canals be needed?
The reason a root canal might be needed is because you have a tooth that has become severely decayed. The decay might have been able to reach the inner pulp, causing pain and significant sensitivity. Another reason you might need a root canal is because a tooth broke or cracked just enough to expose this inner pulp. Most often, a tooth that needs to be root canaled will be severely painful and sensitive to hot and cold.
Who is a candidate for a Root Canal?
To determine if you might need a root canal, we’ll perform a complete examination. X-rays can help us in determining if decay has been able to reach the pulp. If you do need to have a root canal performed, we recommend having the procedure done as soon as possible. Most often, patients who need a root canal will experience pain and sensitivity, so your quality of life can be impacted until a root canal is performed.
What happens during a Root Canal?
The root canal procedure will begin with anesthetic, which is used to numb a section of your mouth. We place a thin rubber dental dam over the tooth. This protects the tooth while it is open, preventing bacteria in the mouth from infecting the canals. We then remove all decay as well as the inside pulp using special dental tools and instruments. The canals of the roots are scraped clean and filled with a putty-like medicated material. The tooth is closed with a filling and the dental dam taken off. You’ll benefit from having a tooth that is pain-free and impervious to sensitivity.
